& Fanous"> & Fanous" />
On Thursday, September 20 at 8:00 pm VCU Jazz presents Mark Feldman (violin) and Ayman Fanous (guitar and bouzoukee) in solo and duo sets of improvisational music. Admission to the Vlahcevic Concert Hall, Singleton Center concert is $15, $10 with VCU Student or MCV Housestaff ID (free to VCU Music Students who sign up in advance).
Mark Feldman has been a soloist on over 150 jazz recordings, including his own releases “Music for Violin Alone” (Tzadik) and “What Exit” (ECM), the latter featuring Neal Kirkwood, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey. As a composer he has been commissioned and performed by the Kronos Quartet and the WDR Radio Orchestra. He received a Grammy Certificate for his role as concertmaster on the Michael Brecker Recording “Wide Angles” in 2003 and is the 2007 recipient of the Alpert Award in the Arts.
Ayman Fanous brings classical and flamenco guitar technique deeply into contemporary free improvisation. He began classical violin studies at age seven and switched to the guitar at twelve. Mostly self-taught, he was first exposed to flamenco at age fifteen and absorbed as much from the great players as he could, especially Paco de Lucia. A chance encounter with Ornette Coleman’s playing in high school led him on a path of discovery which has included serialism, free jazz, and several of the world’s great improvisational music traditions. He counts as influences Cecil Taylor, Eric Dolphy, Derek Bailey, and Ornette Coleman along with classical composers Anton Webern, Morton Feldman, Elliott Carter, Leo Brouwer, and Stepan Rak. In addition, he reaches back into his Egyptian ancestry in improvisations on the bouzoukee.
