Art Basel Miami Beach takes place December 6 - 9, 2007.
Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important art show in the United States, a cultural and social highlight for the Americas. The Department of Graphic Design presents, as part of their Objects + Methods Series, Nell Daniel of Sweat Equity. December 3 at 4:30pm, Grace Street Theater, 930 E. Grace Street.
Daniel is Executive Director for Sweat Equity Enterprises (SEE), a nonprofit learning organization that is an innovative new model of learning and philanthropy investing in the limitless creative potential of underserved young people. SEE empowers its participants to shift from consumers to producers of the objects, media and spaces that are driving our culture. Daniel received a BFA in Photography from Rhode Island School of Design and has taught art, writing, design and
photography in a variety of learning environments ranging from private schools to housing projects. She is an active supporter of greater diversity and equity in education. Daniel previously established the design education series, Design Directions, at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, worked as Director of Admissions for Parsons School of Design, Arts Coordinator for the Partnership for After School Education (PASE), and education consultant for the New Design High School and the Skyscraper Museum. She recently completed her Ph.D. in Education at New York University.

The Department of Kinetic Imaging welcomes visiting artist Tad Hirsch will be speaking Wednesday, November 28 at 10:30am in the Commons Theater.
Tad Hirsch is a researcher and PhD candidate in the Smart Cities Group at MIT’s Media Lab, where his work focuses on the intersections between art, activism, and technology. He has worked with Intel’s People and Practices Research Group, Motorola’s Advanced Concepts Group and the Interaction Design Studio at Carnegie Mellon University, and has several years experience in the nonprofit sector. Tad is also a frequent collaborator with the Institute for Applied Autonomy, an award-winning arts collective that exhibits throughout the United States and Europe. He publishes and lectures widely on a variety of topics concerning social aspects of technology, and has received several prestigious commissions and awards. Tad holds degrees from Vassar College, Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Reynolds Gallery will host a gallery talk featuring Richard Roth Wednesday, November 28 at 7pm. Roth will answer questions and talk about the paintings in his current show “New Paintings,” which runs through December 15, 2007 along with James Hyde’s “Glass Box Paintings: 1995-2007.”
This event is free and open to the public.

Wearable Art 10, a benefit for 1708 Gallery, was held on November 10 and Fashion sophomore Grace Johnston took top prize. Grace’s amazing creation, “X-travagant X-pansionism” won Best in Show at this incredible show of art-meets-fashion. Many other VCUarts students took part, including Megan Mueller (Theo Young Scholarship winner), Oscar Contreras, Kaitlin R. DeMayo, Elizabeth Halstead, Whitney Hughes, Sarah Kelley, Stephanie Kranstover, Adam Krehbiel, Nikki Leone, Raven McLaughlin, Chante Renee Pagan, Susan Pollard, Meg Roberts, Amanda Dalla Villa, Wanda Williams, and part of the elusive Lady Sarenifer (third place winner).

Craft/Material Studies presents Sayumi Yokouchi

Sayumi Yokouchi is a studio artist and faculty member of the Jewelry and Metalsmithing program at the 92Y Art Center in New York City.
Yokouchi’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has received numerous awards including most recent, Artist in Residence Fellowship from the Jentel Foundation in Wyoming in 2006.

The department of Photography & Film is proud to welcome fine art photographer Justine Kurland Tuesday, November 13 at 2:00 in the AFO Building, Bowe St. Deck, room 535.
Kurland graduated from Yale University in 1998 with a Master of Fine Arts degree, after studying with Gregory Crewdson and Philip Lorca di Corcia. Kurland first gained public notice with her work in the group show Another Girl, Another Planet (1999), which displayed her large c-print staged tableau pictures of neo-romantic landscapes inhabited by young adolescent girls, half-sprites, half juvenile delinquents.

Wayne Hodge, a 1998 BFA alumnus, is taking part in the annual group exhibition DRIFT. Rush Arts Gallery will host the 5th annual DRIFT, a three-day show of live performances and video projections by artists from around the world. The exhibition is c0-curated by Bradley Antone Pecore and Eileen Olivieri Torpey from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
