VCUarts professor emeritus Lester Van Winkle has created a different kind of sculpture…a pair of desks, each weighing nearly a ton are intended for students to sit in and essentially adopt as their own.
The creation is in honor of the 40th anniversary of the merger of Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia to make VCU. The large-scale installation will be unveiled in October.

Two Sculpture + Extended Media graduates will have their work featured in “Transformed” at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach through September 28.
The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (CAC) wants you to see toilet paper rolls and gummy bears in a new way.
Those are just two of the unique materials employed by thirteen artists in “Transformed,” a group exhibition of two-dimensional, sculptural, installation and video art. Commonplace objects including fishing line, chairs, toothpicks and light bulbs have been manipulated, re-appropriated and elevated to the status of fine art.
“These materials are frequently relied upon for utilitarian purposes,” said CAC associate curator Natalie Bray. “The works in ‘Transformed’ investigate the physical potential of mundane and familiar items to become art objects that transcend their former roles in everyday life.”
“Transformed” features works by:
Steven Siegel
Tom Friedman
Tara Donovan (VCUarts MFA)
Rachel Perry Welty
Ya Ya Chou
Fishli and Weiss
Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Matt Calderwood
Tim DeVoe (VCUarts MFA)
Robert Lazzarini

intransit brings together 30 artists working in different media such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, film and video. To deal with the cracks in the urban landscape and its decay, the artists have built cross-sections of ecological, racial, and identity issues as metaphors. These meditations, rife with ethnographic, historical and natural symbolism, help to reinforce a position amidst surmounting struggles – for instance, the fight against global warming and the disappearing ideal of the globalized world – to assert their multi-faceted voices and identities. This show presents a dynamic look at today’s society, a complex and poetic visual journey.
Gallery hours are Tuesday to Thursday, from 10 - 8 pm, Friday and Saturday, from 10 - 6 pm, and by appointment. For more information or to receive images, please contact the gallery at 212-268-4444 or email info@motihasson.com.
