Visiting Professor Sandro Del Rosario

Sandro Del Rosario is an animation and media artist. Born in Italy, Sandro received a BFA with honors in Graphic Design from I.S.I.A., Urbino, Italy, and an MFA in Experimental Animation from CalArts, Valencia, CA. His personal work is inspired by places, feelings and memories, and it has been exhibited worldwide, including MOMA, New York (2006), the London Film Festival (2004), and the Annecy Animation Festival (2002). Awards include a Jury Award for Best Italian Short at Imaginale, 2004 and the Kodak Prize for Best Cinematography for his 16mm film “L.City”, which is now published in a DVD compilation with work by Abbas Kiarostami, Takeshi Kitano and Joyce Carol Oates.

In 2005 Sandro began to work on a new experimental project, “Lo Sguardo Italiano” (The Italian Gaze), that has been supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts as well as through fellowships and residencies at a number of prestigious colonies in Europe and in the U.S., among the others the Bogliasco Foundation, the McDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Santa Fe Art Institute.

Sandro traveled extensively and has been an instructor and Visiting Artist at universities and colleges, currently in the Kinetic Imaging Department at VCU. He has taught in partnership with schools and non-profit foundations in Colorado, New Hampshire and Delaware, where he worked with students on creating animated projects and installations about their home and cultural identity.
